Who should apply?

If you live /work or care about DeKalb County and if you are experienced in or committed to service to the community, frequently serve as a community/civic volunteer and are an emerging/established leader in your profession. Leadership DeKalb celebrates the richness of DeKalb County’s diversity and seeks class members who represent the varied cultural and ethnic groups of the community. Adults of all ages are encouraged to apply.

Do I have to live in DeKalb?

You do not have to be a resident to be eligible for this program. If you have any other questions or concerns about the program, please email alan@leadershipdekalb.org.

How do you apply?

You may be nominated by one of our graduates or you may apply once applications open. Applications may be submitted via email, mail or delivered to the Leadership DeKalb Office. [Click here for our contact information]().

Online nominations can be made here. You may also download the nomination form, complete and return it via e-mail or fax to Leadership DeKalb.

What can you expect from the Leadership DeKalb Program?

During the ten-month program, class members learn about a wide range of issues facing DeKalb County, build leadership skills and begin networking across the DeKalb community. Between Orientation and the Closing Retreat, there are seven full-day sessions on topics including DeKalb’s government; health; educational and justice systems; diversity and inclusion; quality of life and more. Class sessions are usually held on the third Thursday of each month from 7:30 a.m. to approximately 6 p.m. Class members also ride a shift with a DeKalb County police officer, attend a governmental meeting and/or budget hearing. Monthly study groups enhance dialogue, promote discussion and develop friendships and professional connections.

How much does it cost?

A $35 non-refundable application fee plus a tuition of $3,200 upon acceptance into the ten-month leadership development program. A limited number of partial financial hardship scholarships (up to $1,500) are available. To apply for a scholarship, please review the guidelines and complete the request form here. Completed form must be submitted with your application. Additionally, a limited number of guaranteed Corporate slots are available for $4,200. Corporations that want to ensure annual participation in the Leadership DeKalb program may apply for these positions. Are scholarships available?

How are members selected?

The Selection Committee, comprised of Leadership DeKalb graduates, will select class members each year to represent all aspects of the DeKalb community, including business, non-profits, education, government; religion, the arts and community volunteers from all of DeKalb County’s ethnic, cultural and racial groups. A demonstrated commitment to community service is a major selection criterion.
